About Team Driving Trucking

Team driving positions pair two CDL holders in one truck so the vehicle can operate nearly around the clock. While one driver sleeps in the sleeper berth, the other keeps the wheels turning. Team drivers earn more per mile than solo drivers and are essential for time-sensitive freight such as expedited shipments and perishable goods.

A Day in the Life

A typical shift as a team driver begins when your partner parks the truck and you climb into the driver seat. You drive your 10-hour shift while your co-driver rests in the sleeper berth behind you. The truck moves almost continuously, covering 1,000 miles or more in a 24-hour period. When your shift ends you swap positions, update your electronic log, and settle in for sleep while the miles keep rolling. Communication and trust between team partners are essential for safety and efficiency.

Pros & Cons of Team Driving Driving

  • + Higher per-mile pay than solo driving positions
  • + Truck runs nearly 24 hours a day for maximum miles

Cons

  • Must share a small living space with another person
