Job Title: Certified Diesel Mechanic Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt
Reports to: Shop Manager Pay Grade: Auxiliary Pay Grade 7
Dept./School: Transportation Department Initiated Date: April 2026

District Primary Purpose: To assist and promote La Joya ISD in implementing a rigorous curriculum/instructional program that supports student success and achievement.
Department Primary Purpose: The Certified Diesel Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, diagnostics, and repair of district-owned school buses and related fleet vehicles in compliance with Texas state laws and safety standards.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification: High School diploma or GED required
ASE Certification (Automotive Service Excellence) in Medium/Heavy Truck (T-Series)
Valid Texas commercial driver’s license (Class B or Class A with Passenger and School Bus Driver Endorsements)
Texas School Bus Driver Certification
Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a diesel mechanic, preferably with heavy-duty vehicles or school buses
Experience with air brake systems (air brake certification preferred)
Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge about diesel and gas engines, basic techniques, and methods of safety
Literacy in the English Language
Demonstrated success in performing a wide variety of tasks requiring an understanding of proficiency in diesel and automotive mechanical repair
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
1. Perform major and minor mechanical repairs, maintenance inspections (PMI’s), diagnostics, and inspections on all district vehicles in a timely and efficient manner and without supervision. Maintain accurate, up-to-date preventive maintenance records.
2. Rebuild, replace, or repair major vehicle components, assemblies, and systems including engines, transmissions, suspensions, electrical, and cooling systems.
3. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing. Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
4. Ensure shop, equipment, and tools are in safe operating condition.
5. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
6. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
7. Determine vehicle condition by conducting inspections and diagnostic tests.
8. Keep equipment available for use by completing preventive maintenance schedules, and installing component and part upgrades.
9. Correct vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts, or systems such as power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brake, steering, and hydraulics; complete machine shop operations; make adjustments and alignments including bearing loads, gear tooth contract, valve mechanisms, governors, oil systems, control linkages, clutches, and traction units.
10. Verify vehicle performance by conducting test drives; and adjusting controls and systems.
11. Comply with federal and state vehicle requirements by testing engine, safety, and combustion control standards.
12. Maintain vehicle records by annotating services and repairs.
13. Keep shop equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies, performing preventive maintenance, and calling for repairs.
14. Contain costs by using warranty, and evaluating service and parts options.
15. Keep supplies ready by inventory stock, place orders, and verify receipt.
16. Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; and read technical and regulation publications.
17. Experience with diagnostic software and electronic engine systems.
18. Thorough knowledge of diesel engine systems and heavy-duty vehicle repair.
19. Knowledge of Texas school transportation laws and safety standards.
20. Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics.
21. Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
22. Ability to maintain detailed maintenance records.
23. Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
24. Strong communication skills and professional demeanor.
25. Perform other duties as assigned.

computer, and maintain accurate and auditable records.
Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Ability to stand; walk, sit and talk or hear.
Ability to use hands to feel and push or pull, be able to stoop and, kneel, crouch and crawl.
Lift and carry objects weighting from 10 to100 lbs.
