A Day in the Life

A typical day as a local reefer driver starts at a refrigerated warehouse where you check your trailer temperature and pick up the day's delivery manifest. You make multiple stops at grocery stores, restaurants, and food service distributors across the metro area, ensuring each delivery stays within the required temperature range. By the end of the day you return to the terminal and head home.

  • + No need to live in a sleeper cab
  • + Consistent daily routine and work-life balance
  • + Health benefits from regular meals and sleep schedule
  • + Growing demand from e-commerce and last-mile delivery

Cons

  • Lower per-mile pay compared to OTR and regional
  • More physical work with frequent loading and unloading
  • Heavy city traffic and tight dock maneuvering
  • Early morning start times (often 3 AM to 5 AM)
  • Higher number of stops per day means more paperwork

About Refrigerated (Reefer) Trucks

Reefer trailers are temperature-controlled units used to transport perishable goods including produce, dairy, meat, and pharmaceuticals. Drivers must monitor and maintain precise temperatures throughout the trip, adding an extra layer of responsibility. Reefer loads tend to pay more than dry van freight and are available year-round thanks to the constant demand for fresh food.
