A Day in the Life

A typical day as a local flatbed driver might involve picking up steel or lumber from a supplier and delivering it to construction sites around the metro area. You spend time securing each load with chains and straps, then navigate through city traffic to make your deliveries. The work is physical and satisfying, and you are home every evening.

Pros & Cons of Local Driving

Pros

  • + Home every night with weekends typically off
  • + No need to live in a sleeper cab
  • + Consistent daily routine and work-life balance
  • + Health benefits from regular meals and sleep schedule
  • + Growing demand from e-commerce and last-mile delivery

Cons

  • Lower per-mile pay compared to OTR and regional
  • More physical work with frequent loading and unloading
  • Heavy city traffic and tight dock maneuvering
  • Early morning start times (often 3 AM to 5 AM)
  • Higher number of stops per day means more paperwork

About Flatbed Trucks

Flatbed trailers have an open deck with no sides or roof, making them ideal for oversized cargo like lumber, steel, machinery, and building materials. Flatbed drivers must know how to tarp and secure loads using chains, straps, and binders, which is a specialized skill set that commands premium pay. The work is more physically demanding but highly rewarding for drivers who prefer hands-on tasks.
