About Regional Trucking

Regional trucking positions cover a defined multi-state area, usually within a 500-to-1,000-mile radius of a home terminal. Drivers on regional routes enjoy a better balance between earning potential and home time, typically returning home every weekend. It is a popular choice for experienced drivers who want predictable schedules without sacrificing competitive pay.

A Day in the Life

A typical day as a regional driver starts at your home terminal, where you pick up a loaded trailer and head out on a familiar route. You cover two to four hundred miles within your region, making scheduled pickups and deliveries. Because the territory is defined, you learn the best routes, fuel stops, and rest areas over time. Most regional drivers are home every week or every other week, which offers a solid balance between miles and personal time.

Pros & Cons of Regional Driving

Pros

  • + Home every week or every other week
  • + Competitive pay close to OTR rates
  • + Familiar routes reduce navigation stress
  • + Consistent weekly miles and paychecks
  • + Good stepping stone to dedicated or local positions

Cons

  • Still requires multiple nights away from home
  • Earnings slightly lower than top OTR positions
  • Territory can shift based on carrier needs
  • Weekend home time may be limited to one full day
  • Weather challenges within your region can disrupt schedules

About Tanker Trucks

Tanker trucks transport liquid or gaseous cargo such as fuel, chemicals, milk, and water. Drivers typically need a Tanker (N) endorsement on their CDL, and many tanker loads also require a Hazmat (H) endorsement. The specialized nature of tanker hauling means drivers earn above-average pay, though the role demands extra caution due to the shifting weight of liquid cargo.
