Job Description

Job Responsibilities: The Paving Screed and Skid-Steer Operator is responsible for and highly skilled in the safe and efficient operation of an asphalt paver and a skid-steer with bucket, milling/planner head, broom, and other attachments. He performs equipment operation functions relating to the completion of parking lot maintenance and construction projects. He also assists with non-asphalt installation projects such as sealcoating, striping, and concrete. Skills and Qualifications: Education/Experience High School Diploma/GED At least 2-5 years of experience operating a skid-steer loader on road construction projects. Licensing/Registration Required:Driver's License in good standing Class A CDL is a plus Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to comprehend, retain, and communicate complex plans. Verifiable leadership qualities. Proficient in operating various types of heavy mobile equipment and attachments. Excellent oral communication skills and interpersonal skills. Successful completion of pre-employment MVR, physical, background and drug screen. Knowledge of materials, equipment, methods and techniques used in road construction and grade control. Ability to work non-routine hours, when necessary. Technology Use: Google Maps Ability to learn quickly and use critical thinking skills. Ability to lift/carry on a regular basis at least 50-90lbs personally. Ability to bend, crouch, stoop, and use hand tools. Maintain constant alertness to the multiple activities on the job site including equipment, employees, and other traffic. Ability to comply with and identify potential safety concerns. Ability to stand, kneel or sit for long periods of time. Knowledge of trenching and shoring standards. Knowledge of weight requirements of loads. Knowledge of equipment and their uses. Understand and apply basic mathematical skills. Knowledge of basic measurements and how to read a tape measure. Ability to drive a truck and trailer safely. Job Duties Screed Operation Duties (Primary Duty) Ensure screed is level and adjust as needed prior to paving. Inspect the paver prior to paving to ensure everything is working properly. Assist the foreman and paver operator with planning the job. This includes determining depth requirements, water drainage direction, using a measuring wheel and measuring tape as needed to determine yield. Assist foreman and paver operator with the layout and painting of the paving plan. Control the yield by operating valves to regulate the flow of material at a specified rate. Signals the paver operator to start and stop as needed. Observes the distribution of material over road surfaces to ensure uniform distribution. Turns screws to set the angle and depth of the screed. Use depth gauge to verify depth specifications of the compacted asphalt. Assist in cleaning excess asphalt off of the paver. Skid Steer Operation Duties (Secondary Duty) Operate skid-steer safely and efficiently in road, parking lot and driveway construction and paving and milling. Dig, spread, mill, and level construction materials. Load dump truck with material such as millings, gravel, asphalt, etc. Operate small power tools such as jack hammer. Monitor and provide maintenance for all skid-steers and mini excavator, including: oil changes, greasing fittings, cleaning, checking bolts and lug nuts, etc. Locate utilities and other buried lines prior to digging. Supervision and participation in ensuring that work meets contract specifications. Assist with the training of new skid-steer operators. Other Paving Duties Loading and unloading materials Shoveling and raking dirt, gravel, and asphalt when not needed on paver or skid-steer. Set-up and maintenance of traffic control Checking and maintaining painted guide lines and grade stakes General clean-up around job site. Sealcoating Crew Duties Clean parking lot as needed. Assist with crack sealing, and oil spot priming. Place sealcoating material with hand squeegee. Assist with striping operations. Other Duties Keep time and material records. Maintain a positive attitude, reliable attendance, and meet company standards Perform other miscellaneous labor duties.
