About Local Trucking

Local trucking jobs operate within a 100-to-200-mile radius, allowing drivers to be home every night. These positions often involve multiple stops per day, including deliveries to stores, warehouses, or construction sites. Local driving is an excellent fit for those who value work-life balance, and demand for local CDL drivers continues to grow as e-commerce expands.

A Day in the Life

A typical day as a local dry van driver starts early at the terminal, where you hook up to a pre-loaded trailer and receive your delivery schedule. You make multiple stops throughout the metro area, navigating city streets and backing into loading docks at warehouses and retail stores. By late afternoon you return your trailer to the yard, complete your paperwork, and head home in time for dinner.

Pros & Cons of Local Driving

Pros

  • + Home every night with weekends typically off
  • + No need to live in a sleeper cab
  • + Consistent daily routine and work-life balance
  • + Health benefits from regular meals and sleep schedule
  • + Growing demand from e-commerce and last-mile delivery

Cons

  • Lower per-mile pay compared to OTR and regional
  • More physical work with frequent loading and unloading
  • Heavy city traffic and tight dock maneuvering
  • Early morning start times (often 3 AM to 5 AM)
  • Higher number of stops per day means more paperwork

About Dry Van Trucks

Dry van trailers are fully enclosed, non-temperature-controlled boxes used to haul general freight such as consumer goods, electronics, and packaged food. They are the most common trailer type on American highways and offer the widest variety of available loads. Dry van driving is often recommended for newer CDL holders because loading and unloading is typically handled by warehouse staff.
